Breast milk is liquid gold, there is no denying that, but did you know that there are many alternative uses for it?

It is one of the most powerful natural substances, so it comes as no surprise that it has many other uses than life-giving milk full of essential nutrients and immune-boosting properties.

We asked some of our breastfeeding friends what they have used their milk for other than feeding their babies, and here are the most common and unexpected responses.

Teething

If your baby is around the six-month mark and has been introduced to solids, consider giving them breastmilk ice lollies sometimes referred to as "momsicles" to help with teething pain. All you will need to do is freeze some of your excess milk in ice pop moulds; you could even add some finely chopped or pureed fruits or veggies to your milk before freezing.

Rashes

If your baby has a mild nappy rash, breast milk might be the answer to your prayers. Many breastfeeding mothers use some of their breast milk to soothe their babies bottom. They also say it can help prevent it from spreading too.

Blocked tear duct

A blocked tear duct is very common and normal in newborn babies and will self-regulate in time. However, many parents within the breastfeeding community believe it helped treat their babies inflamed or clogged tear duct when applied topically.

Cracked or sore nipples

Breast milk isn't just good for your baby. It's good for you too. If you have dry, cracked or sore nipples, try rubbing some milk on the affected area to help soften and ease any pain. However, if the problem persists, make sure to get in touch with your family doctor or an accredited lactation consultant.

Skin moisturiser

As mentioned above, breast milk can be used to soothe skin irritants, but it can also help be used to moisturise and treat dry skin elsewhere on the body. Some parents rate it for treating mild eczema and chapped lips while others believe it helps to loosen cradle cap.

As a soap

Let's face it, we all at some point throw our liquid gold down the sink for one reason or another, but after reading this, you will never do it again. Instead of dumping your liquid gold, make a milk bath for your little one. Simply dilute any leftover breastmilk in with their next bath and watch as it makes their delicate and sensitive skin silky soft. Some mums add porridge oats to the water to enhance its efficiency.
