The transition back to work is a difficult time for moms but it can be made a whole lot smoother for you and your baby with some preparation

Returning to work after having a baby is a bit like your first day back after your Summer hols; except you haven’t spent a week in the sun, you’ve spent six months or so raising your little bundle of joy. You’re also not going to be showing off your tan, rather showing off your pics of the cutest baby on the planet (not that you’re biased). There is the same feeling of dread though (for most of us) except it’s ten times worse... There are a few things you can do to make the transition a little easier:
  • Write down your little one’s routine to pass on to whoever is looking after them.
  • It’s best to do this well in advance of your return as it can be very emotional going through all their likes and dislikes and it’s not something you want to be working on the night before you have to leave them. All babies are different so it’s good for whoever is minding them to know all the little things that keep them content.
  • Check if your company would consider letting you adjust your working hours.
  • By starting earlier and finishing earlier you could avoid the rush hour traffic and have less time travelling and more time at home. Although it might not be an option there’s nothing to lose by asking the question.
  • Work out how you can be as organised as possible. Decide on outfits the night before (for both of you), have a list of their essentials that need to be packed into their bag, try out some recipes that are quick and simple and ideally cook big quantities that will do for more than one meal. Quick fixes are your new best friend; dry shampoo, BB creams and multitasking beauty products will mean you can look good in the minimal amount of time.
  • On your first day back make a point of having a chat with other working mums in the office. They will understand exactly what you’re going through and give you the support and encouragement you need. They will also be the people that are most interested in seeing your photos and hearing all about how you’re getting on as a new family.
  • If it’s financially an option for you, then consider getting a cleaner. Paying someone else to get on top of the chores once a week (or even once a fortnight) means that when you’re off you can spend quality time with your child rather than doing the housework.
  • It can help to plan your weekend in advance so that you have something to look forward to and you can make the most of your family time. Even if it’s going for a scenic walk or a picnic (best to have a back up in case it rains) it means you don’t waste time trying to make a decision on Saturday morning.
Although it can be heart wrenching, try and find the positives in your new situation. Treat yourself to a nice new outfit that would be totally unsuitable if you were looking after your little one and slip on your heels again. Enjoy your uninterrupted lunch breaks by reading a book that you’ve been desperate to get into and appreciate the chance to drink a cup of tea without letting it go cold!
