If your children have been flying through their book collection recently, it's always fun to watch the movie or TV series adaptation right afterwards.
Children's books adaptations have been happening since the dawn of video it seems. We've had the likes of Harry Potter, Willie Wonka, The Wizard of Oz, and Matilda all turned into famous live-action creations and wonders. And each one always has a special place for all of us (that's why we keep going back for a re-watch!).
So, in honour of the great tradition, here are eight different movies and TV shows which you and your family can watch online that first started out as books.
Yes Day (Netflix)
A brand new addition to Netflix this March was the Jennifer Garner family movie Yes Day. Based on the short children's book of the same name by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, it sees two parents say "YES!" to everything their three children ask of them. Expect plenty of hilarious and whacky moments here.
Dr. Seuss' The Lorax (Amazon Prime)
Dr. Seuss' 1971 classic was given the animation treatment nearly 10 years ago, and it's still a wonder to behold. The story follows one twelve-year-old boy's adventure as he tries to find a grumpy little woodland creature named The Lorax.
Muppet Treasure Island (Disney+)
Time to watch an all-time classic on Disney+ if you and your little ones haven't done so yet. The oddballs known as The Muppets have been on our screens throughout our childhoods, with Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and the gang all making us laugh as they get themselves into ridiculous situations. Their Muppet Treasure Island adaptation is still the best adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's 19th Century novel in our eyes.
Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events (Netflix)
The brilliance of A Series Of Unfortunate Events was adapted into a Netflix TV show starring Neil Patrick Harris a number of years ago. The dark comedy sees three orphans be placed under the care of their distant relative, the madcap character of Count Olaf. After you've watched the three seasons, the movie adaptation with Jim Carrey is also available to watch on the streaming platform too.
The One And Only Ivan (Disney+)
This fantasy adventure film stars Bryan Cranston as Mack, the ringmaster of a circus that features Ivan, a silverback gorilla. However, with business beginning to quieten down, Mack purchases a baby elephant named Ruby in order to help boose the show. A charming tale featuring the voices of Angelina Jolie and Danny DeVito, it is based on the children's novel by Katherine Applegate.
Fantastic Mr. Fox (Amazon Prime)
Directed by the highly-acclaimed film director Wes Anderson, this stop motion animation brings Roald Dahl's classic children's book to life. Featuring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep and many, many more, this will always be one of our favourite children's books adaptations.
The Princess Diaries (Disney+)
Becoming a Princess isn't always a fairytale, and that's exactly what teenager Mia Thermopolis discovers when her estranged father dies. Transforming from a girl who prefers to stay out of the limelight, to becoming Princess of Genovia isn't as easy as it seems - especially when you're not great at walking in heels. The Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews movies were adapted from Meg Cabot's young adult novel series.
The Last Kids On Earth (Netflix)
What happens when your world gets overrun with zombies and monsters of all kinds? Well, you get a group of your friends and try to survive of course! This cute TV animation series adaptation from Netflix is based on the series of books by author Max Brallier and is full of hilarious action moments and excitement for all.
