Family Moments is about the wonderful experience of connecting as a family.
In this series, we encourage parents to take a look at those truly special family moments. Memories that evoke a feeling of pure joy because they represent quality time with the people we love the most. The realities of modern day life can make these family moments feel out of our reach a lot of the time. Through this series, parents take a look at the obstacles that can get in the way of these happy family experiences with a view to making some changes so that life can involve more of them. Today we’re speaking to Rosie Connolly.
A little bit about me and my family.
I am a mother of two from Dublin. My son has just started junior infants and my little girl is 6 months old now. I also have a beautiful stepson who is the best big brother they could ask for.
Our favourite way to spend time together is...
It would definitely be getting out in the fresh air, whether that’s to Howth for a walk along the pier and ice cream or to the local beach. It’s the one time we all switch off and enjoy the moment. Can’t beat a cinema date with the kids on a rainy day either!
Our most cherished family moment is...
Our first holiday, since my daughter arrived, has to be up there with some of the best memories. No work, no stress. Just sunshine, good food and quality time together where my son didn’t get out of the pool for most of the day! It was a dream to just switch off and get away from the madness of everyday life.
The thing that gets in the way of us spending time together is...
Our jobs! Both myself and my husband are self-employed which means switching off for the evening is almost impossible. We are like passing ships in the night at times; only seeing each other during the day so we can swap over the kids and let the other person get some work done. We don’t use any childminders etc so it’s a lot of juggling our time to make it work.
Our pledge as a family:
We pledge to have more phone-free days where I just leave my phone at home for the day. I try to put it away or on airplane mode but knowing it’s there is too tempting to just pick it up and check emails, DMs etc so I want to start leaving it at home so there’s no temptation!
We also want to make sure to eat together every evening. With our busy lives, it’s not always possible that we all eat together and having two fussy eaters in the house means we all end up eating different things but I would like to make sure we sit and eat together as much as possible.
