Ireland is heading toward being the fattest country in Europe in 2030

Easter is here!
Have you got the leg of lamb ready for the roasting and don’t forget the mint sauce and rosemary, and the bottle of red wine, sure it would be rude not too!

I can remember Easter at my home place; there are 6 of us together with my parents and my nana so the table was always full of happy memories & entertainment.  I can remember going to my relations in Tipperary and seeing they gave up sweets for Lent. They had a massive glass jar of goodies ready for Easter Sunday. I said to my cousin, so you actually gave up sweets for 40 days and 40 nights... All of Lent?  Needless to say I was going to give up sweets next Easter year and I did...until my bother found my stash and put a heavy dent in it, I was gutted!  That ended that. How many kids do this now? Can you give sweets for Lent? Mmmmmm!

SUGAR is the culprit nowadays. It’s not just the sugar in biscuits, buns and cakes; it’s a question that I ask my clients frequently. Do you eat sugary foods, normally you will get the answer “no my diet is quite good”. But then if I dig a bit deeper and take a look at their food diary for 2-3 days; this is part of my nutritional assessment questionnaire and count how many teaspoons of sugar in each food per day, it’s quite frightening. What seems to be really healthy nutritious food is actually extremely high in sugar. It’s the HIDDEN SUGARS in food that are the issue. Being aware of reading labels is crucial. 4grams = 1 teaspoon of sugar.
1 in 4 adults are obese,
1 in 6 children are obese.
Ireland is heading toward being the fattest country in Europe in 2030.  All the extra sugar is causing detrimental effects on our health: obesity, depression, dementia, stroke, fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes, amputation and tooth decay.
I am extremely passionate about this as I see it with my own clients. So much so that I have created an online program called The Sugar Queen Program, a 30 day program that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. Aimed at the individual that is secretly hooked on sugar, sweet foods or the parent who is trying to improve their family’s health or concerned about their overall sugar intake. Just to highlight that on average kids will probably get 3 Easter eggs.
  • Small Easter eggs on average have 14 teaspoons
  • Medium Easter eggs on average have 23 teaspoon
  • Large Easter eggs on average have 37 teaspoons
  • Extra-large Easter eggs on average have 60 teaspoons
Adults are advised by the WHO to only have 6 teaspoons of sugar per day:
8-16 years 5 teaspoons per day
5-8 years 4 teaspoon per day
2-5 years 3 teaspoons per day
0-2 years none
So being a mother of 3 kids 6, 4 and 3 as well as being a Nutritional Therapist, I watch the Easter egg consumption very closely. There is always the next day. Yes I do allow my kids to have treats, but in MODERATION and after all you are the parent or carer.
