Right now, the Covid-19 pandemic shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, looking at the figures this week there's huge potential for a second wave as flu season fast approaches, and it's pretty terrifying when you think about it.
Halloween is on everyone's minds - will it go ahead? The truth is, trick or treating doesn't have to be a lost cause this Halloween; after all, it is one of the kids' favourite times of the year.
With the right methods, we can make it a safe night to remember. So if you are planning on giving out sweets with your family, here are some extra precautions you can take to hand out Halloween treats safely to your community:
Wear a mask
First and foremost, protect yourself. While many parents will be avoiding trick or treating in crowds this year, there will be a small minority who will ignore public health recommendations. In the case you find yourself swamped with kids around your home, ensure you are wearing a face-covering each time you open your front door. Alternatively, you could incorporate your facemask into a Halloween costume.
Avoid cross-contamination
Many people like to let children reach in and pick their favourite sweet treat from a large bowl on Halloween night, but his year that's going to change. Allowing a child to put their hand in a bowl, then another can potentially spread the virus. Instead, opt to give the candy out yourself in order to divide out the Halloween treats safely.
Make individual bags
A couple of days before Halloween make up some treat bags in recyclable brown paper bags to give out to the kids. It's also worth mentioning to avoid giving out any homemade goods this year. Factory wrapped sweets and treats are the best options this year.
Create a candy chute
If possible, try to make a candy chute in your garden just like the one Andrew Beattie has done. He created the completely touch-free chute using a recycled shipping tube and will have markers at the bottom showing youngins where to put their bag or basket. It's rather genius.
Use a barrier
Alternatively, set up a spooky table in your driveway with grab-and-go bags or candy cups for kids to grab as they pass your house to keep close contacts small. This way you can still showcase your spectacular spooky Halloween decorations for everyone to enjoy. Hopefully, children will be considerate and just take one bag each.
