Ali Coughlan's lockdown project was to transform her fridge in to a Smeg style fridge.

During this time of quarantine many people are using it as a time to work through some household chores and projects. Lovers of DIY are upholstering, re purposing and painting everything they can get their hands on. Well one mum started a very unique painting project and I think you'll agree that she did an incredible job painting her fridge.

The words painting and fridge are not commonly used together unless it relates to sticking the kids art work up there. Ali Coughlan had other ideas though. She painted her family fridge a beautiful light blue colour to give the impression of a Smeg style fridge. According to Ali

"Well I've always wanted a Smeg so this is the next best thing"

In the IGTV video Ali shows us exactly how she completed the project and admits that you do have to have patience for this project which takes a couple of days to complete. Her biggest challenge was allowing it to dry with "little food monsters" living in her house.

Ali cleaned the fridge, sanded it, primed it and painted it and we just can't believe how brilliantly it turned out. As you will see from her account Ali is an arts and crafts lover but upon watching the video we definitely felt like we could do the same to our own fridge. Ali used a kitchen knife to remove the old branding from the fridge and it looked surprisingly easy. Ali admits to "kind of making it up" as she went along, but it really paid off!

Using a quick-dry paint made all the difference according to Ali. After two coats of primer she got to do the really fun part. She painted the fridge a beautiful pastel blue and we really enjoyed this part of the transformation. After one colourful coat the fridge dried overnight (did we just say that?) and she began her second blue coat. The final result was stunning. It totally brightened up her already beautiful kitchen.

Ali recommends spending a lot of time prepping it (particularly removing sticker residue), doing two layers of primer and to ensure it's properly dry in between each coat of primer and paint.

Will you be painting your fridge? We're a little tempted now....
