Decorating and putting together your baby's nursery really is one of the most exciting moments in your pregnancy. Seeing the furniture, crib and baby items makes it finally feel real. Soon your baby will be here.
Not every family will have the luxury of having a room to decorate for their infant. Perhaps it is a corner of your own bedroom for example. When decorating and organising your baby's “space” there are a number of things I would recommend that you consider.
Not every family will have the luxury of having a room to decorate for their infant. Perhaps it is a corner of your own bedroom for example. When decorating and organising your baby's “space” there are a number of things I would recommend that you consider.
- As adorable as they are it is important to remember that a lot of decorative pieces can in fact be unsafe for your infant to be close to. Before purchasing any cot bumpers or pillows ensure that they are safe and appropriate for your little one. Less is more when it comes to your infant's safety during sleep. Teddy bears and stuffed animals are not recommended in your baby's crib as they are a hazard for several reasons.
- You may need less than you think. I bought several blankets and ended up using a sleeping bag in the end. Sleeping Bags or “Gro Bags” are often a great option for ensuring that your baby is warm while sleeping. If using blankets ensure that it is a cellular blanket. This is the type recommended by health professionals for safe sleeping.
- Where you position your crib is very important. It may be important to consider the temperature of certain parts of the room as well as the areas which are closer to noise and any drafts.
- Black out blinds can be very practical during the summer months when it can be broad daylight at your baby's bed time.
- Consider a comfortable area in the room where you can feed and settle your baby at bed time or during any night-wakings. A comfortable rocking chair is often a great option here. It will serve you well for several years as it can be used for subsequent children and for story time etc.
- Lighting is another important consideration. If your baby wakes at night you may want to enter the room with some soft lighting to assist you. A main light will often wake your baby further and make it more difficult to re-settle them. A night light or monitor which contains a built-in light is often the best choice.
- If decorating the room whilst pregnant it might be a good idea to chose neutral colours. It is not impossible that the gender could differ from what your ultrasound technician believed to be true.
