Depending on the layout of your property, the space under your stairs can offer a whole host of different options. Of course, many homes use it in the traditional sense – hiding coats and cleaning bits which is fine but there are ways to bring it to life.
Here we give you some tips to make the most out of the space under the stairs storage.
Store books and chill – It can be a great place to pop books underneath the stairs and make it a lovely reading area with storage for books. This is perfect for smaller homes and ones that have a bookworm in it! It can be a wonderful area to escape the sitting room noise and kitchen havoc!
Bathroom – If you only have an upstairs bathroom a downstairs bathroom could be the answer to your prayers especially for busy families. Also, sometimes it is good to have a downstairs bathroom for those who are less able to climb stairs. It may be a bit of an outlay financially, but it could work wonders in your home, and you can do it on a budget. Get a plan together and make sure you get expert help in fitting your bathroom and everything else.
Add to your kitchen space – If you are finding it hard to fit everything into your kitchen, consider making the under stairs storage area a nice larder or pantry. It can help you store everything away neatly and using some sliding doors to add to the design and aesthetic of the area itself. However, there is a need to be smart as if your kitchen is miles away from you under stairs storage it probably isn’t a good idea.
Add cupboards and storage solutions – This isn’t the most creative of ideas and it may not be what you want, however, it may be what you need. Having under stairs basic storage with built-in cupboards and shelves can be a good way to hide things away and make space in your home.
If you pick the right type of cupboards it could be stylish too and shelving can add extra depth to the area. You can hide everything away too with the right kind of cupboards that conceal everything with a door. There is the option of keeping everything open and free to view but this is for the super organised and works if you want to show off stuff – not for hiding the vacuum!
Knock it out for a tiny kid’s corner – If the space is big enough there is every chance you could make it a small play area for your kids. Give is a good clear out and pop in some bean bags and toys. You could even add a mini gate along it ensure the toys don’t escape! Lots of fun for your kiddies.
Good luck with it!
