We might not be able to give our mams a hug this year, but that doesn't mean we can't watch one of our favourites on screen.
Unfortunately for many of us, this year's Mother's Day will be another virtual affair. And so, for those of us across the country who will be away from our families this special weekend, here are some of the best on-screen mams we can watch on demand to make us feel a little bit better.
Mamma Mia (Netflix)
Where would we be without ABBA? And just as importantly, where would we be without Meryl Streep? Mamma Mia is one of our all-time favourites, with more singing, dancing, and complicated family matters than you can shake a stick at. The aloof hotel owner could potentially be one of the best on-screen mams ever, if not the most memorable.
The Incredibles 1 & 2 (Disney+)
We all love a bad-ass, and Elastigirl is certainly one of the best on-screen mams with that all-important rebellious streak. The Incredibles 2 sees her take centre stage as she fights crime while Mr. Incredible stays at home with the children, which is a more accurate portrayal of modern family life these days.
Wonder (Netflix)
Based on the best-selling novel, Wonder is such an uplifting movie. Julia Roberts stars as mum Isabel, whose 10-year-old son Auggie learns to be comfortable with himself as he attends school for the first time. Will you be an emotional wreck after watching this? Absolutely.
Dating Amber (Amazon Prime)
We all love a cheeky Irish comedy, and Dating Amber is one that will leave a lasting impression on you after the credits roll. Starring Sharon Horgan, she plays the mother of a young teenager who is struggling with his sexuality. Always there to assure him that he can tell her anything, the movie is packed full of dry humour and slang that'll have you giggling along.
Little Women (Sky Cinema & NOW TV)
Oh we just love Little Women. No matter which version you choose (we're going to concentrate on the 2019 version), you're going to love it. The brilliant Laura Dern plays Marmee March in the latest adaptation that we have seen, as the mother of the house who keeps everything running. The perfect film if you're looking for something uplifting.
Easy A (Netflix)
Sure, the movie might be more of a coming-of-age title than the others, but it does feature a pair of stellar parents. Patricia Clarkson plays the mother of a teenager who is really going through the motions at school, and offers up expert advice without too much judgement. She and Stanley Tucci together are parents all of us would love to have.
Don't forget that while we may be away from our mother's this weekend, we can still join in on some virtual fun to see the best on-screen mams. Should you want to host a watch party of any titles of your choice, the majority of streamers offer up their own way to do so. Through Amazon Prime and Disney+, you can do it from the app itself. While with Netflix, you'll have to download the Netflix Party app.
