'Senior Year' featuring Rebel Wilson is getting slated by the critics, but my advice is to ignore the bad reviews.
If you were a teenager in the nineties or noughties, here are five reasons why you’ll love 'Senior Year' more than teenage Britney loved her pigtails.
The Soundtrack
Where do I start? From 'The Bad Touch' by the Bloodhound Gang to 'Sk8er Boi' by Avril Lavigne, if you want to take a trip down memory lane then you’ve come to the right place.
You definitely don’t want to miss Rebel doing her best Britney impression while singing and dancing to '(You Drive Me) Crazy' - although tongue-in-cheek it's nonetheless impressive. Kelly Clarkson and Shania Twain get a look in too, and you’ll be delighted to hear that none other than B*Witched gives the film a poptastic send-off with 'C'est La Vie'.
The Retro Posters
When Stephanie goes home from hospital as a 37 year-old, she finds out that her bedroom is untouched. You can therefore delight in seeing her walls covered in retro posters that probably took pride of place in your bedroom too. I ticked so many off my list I lost count!
Robbie Williams, NSYNC, Britney, P!nk, Madonna, the 'Romeo and Juliet' movie poster and last but not least, 'Clueless'. Which is interesting because guess who makes a cameo...?
Alicia Silverstone
The 'Clueless' actress appears late on in the film and plays the role of Deanna, who is the former cheer captain at her school. While Stephanie thought Deanna had "the perfect life", she reveals that it’s not the case.
While she is tasked with delivering an important message, I could barely concentrate on what she was saying because I was so in awe of her presence. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 27 years since she played the iconic character of Cher!
The Fashion, Hair And Make-Up
The tacky butterfly hair clips, the Juicy Couture tracksuit (which funnily enough is back), the chunky black heels and low-slung flared jeans; it’s like seeing your old wardrobe come back to life! And of course, you’ll see your go-to beauty products too. We all remember coating our lashes in Maybelline 'Great Lash Mascara' and dousing ourselves in CK One.
The Hilariously Outdated Forms Of Entertainment
Remember the days when we’d kick back and listen to our CD Walkmans, watch a VHS, play with our polaroid cameras, and be obsessed with magazines? Yep, we can certainly relate to Stephanie’s interests. While manifesting is a new craze, years ago we’d simply pin pictures that represented all our hopes and dreams onto a notice board like Stephanie does!
And last but not least, one of the funniest scenes in 'Senior Year' is when Stephanie sees her reflection in the mirror after waking up from her coma. She mistakes herself for a stranger because she can’t believe how old she looks. As mums, I think we have that same problem every morning!
