No matter how prepared you are there will always be some things that take you by surprise
I read the books, watched the programmes and even took notes in our antenatal classes.
But do you think I was prepared for having a baby? Absolutely not.
Some of it was of no surprise. There were dirty nappies, hunger and not a whole lot of sleeping.
There were many things that I really was not expecting though. The weird, the wonderful and the utterly bizarre.

- You will suddenly have a new found appreciation for parent and child car-spaces. You drive towards them eagerly waiting to see a person with no child parking there. You have to stop yourself from shouting out the window sometimes.
- You talk about Poo as if it were the weather. It is a very normal topic these days.
- You notice your partner referring to you as “Mammy”, even when the baby is not around.
- Baby rice? Puree? Biscuits? Somehow all of these items seem to require the taste-test from you. Before you know it you’ve eaten half of your child’s meal.
- It may take a solid thirty minutes to discover that you and your partner have been watching Ben And Holly long after your child has gone to bed.
- Your child might nap at similar times each day. A day where you are relying on the nap time to do something? They will refuse. Likewise can be said for a day you need to be somewhere on time– they will of course nap for longer than normal. Sods law.
- It will feel perfectly acceptable to eat lunch at 11am. In a previous life you would not have even risen from the bed at that time.
- You wonder what you did before you had children. You could have built an empire.
- You will be able to survive and function on an insanely small amount of sleep.
- You will feel proud of everything they do. Don’t they just hiccup so perfectly?
