Sometimes it creeps up on you and suddenly you realise your child that seemed a little anxious is now overly anxious, all the time. It can be worrying for parents as they try to encourage their child to do things and let them lead an anxiety free life.
Sometimes it creeps up on you and suddenly you realise your child that seemed a little anxious is now overly anxious, all the time. It can be worrying for parents as they try to encourage their child to do things and let them lead an anxiety free life. Raising an anxious child has its challenges but there are some things you can do to make it easier, so we have compiled our tips here:
Learn to help them manage their issues
The reality is, your child will never be able to rid themselves of anxiety, but they can learn to manage their feelings with some help from you. Firstly, have a good chat with your child and write down the major stressors in their life and why. Figure out how to alleviate these stress and anxiety triggers even if it means you must tell someone about their anxiety. Your child may like going to dancing but perhaps, they are struggling to cope with the demands of it. Consider talking to the people who your child spends time with too and discuss the options with them.
Stop short of avoiding triggers
Unless it is something basic you may not be able to avoid the triggers that cause your youngster stress. School is a source of anxiety for many kids, but they must go, so there isn’t a solution where you can take them away from every anxiety trigger, unfortunately.
Respect your child’s feelings and fears
Don’t berate your child for feeling anxious – believe me, they don’t mean to do it and they would rather feel happier in their own skin. Their fears are theirs and therefore, no matter how silly you consider them to be, you must support your kiddie. Listen to your kid and help them face some of their issues but don’t force them into a position that will cause a huge amount of anxiety. Take little steps and build their confidence slowly. Don’t forget your child needs to trust you and they can only do this wholeheartedly if you are emphatic and caring towards them.
Talk to your kiddie
It is true to say that “a problem shared is a problem halved” so if your child is worrying – share the load. Sit down with them and go through the mountains of homework with them. Make it fun and be relaxed. Let them express their feelings while you listen and offer solutions. If they have a test remind your kid that they can only do their best and don’t run on academic results if your child is stressed by them. Love your child for being themselves and not what they achieve. Show them you are proud all the time.
Learn how to manage anxiety for all the family
Adopt a healthy mind attitude at home and encourage the family to share any problems or worries they may have. Be openminded and run an “open door” policy so your kids know nothing goes unsaid in your house as you are happy to help them. Spend time together at dinner and ban technology at certain times for family time. Chatting together and being happy in each other’s company goes a long way in helping anxiety in your family and for your anxious child.
If your child continues to be anxious and you are becoming concerned, check in with your local doctor for more advice.
