Christmas can be a tough time for some and if you don’t have many loved ones around (for whatever reason) you may be facing a difficult Christmas.
If you have kids and a partner, you may find it hard to not be like everyone else who has days of family visits and lots of fun ahead.
Other people may be separated and thus have left one side of a family which can leave you feeling lonely and with a huge gap in your life.
The reasons you may not have many family members to visit are endless and regardless, going through Christmas with fewer people around you can be challenging but it doesn’t have to be.
Making the most of Christmas, even when you haven’t many loved ones to share it with, is important and not just because it’s meant to be a magical time of year but because you need to find the best way to enjoy it, so it doesn’t upset you anymore.
While for some, Christmas has a magical way of making people forget their troubles, sadly, for others it amplifies them and shows them the things they are missing in their life.
If you are missing someone or lots of people, it is horrible and no amount of eggnog or festive cheer can change that. However, we have some ways to help you to enjoy Christmas in your own individual way.
Here are some tips on making the most of Christmas when you haven’t many family members. We hope they help.
-
Visit pals.
Often, friends can mean more to you than family, so if you are blessed with wonderful friends – be grateful! Talk to your friends about visiting over Christmas and making the most of the festive period.
Do days out and invite them over to you too so you get an opportunity to play host. Even if it isn’t with relatives, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy every minute of it. -
Make your own traditions
If you have your kiddies and your partner, you can make a tradition that your little family will love. When you have children, you have an opportunity to make a new family for yourself and adopt new traditions and values into your home.
Play games, go out, see Santa and enjoy every minute of it. Although you may miss family and loved ones, it doesn’t mean you can’t create a Christmas you will adore. Your kids will enjoy the festive period with you and time flies, so enjoy it now! -
Be grateful for what you have.
It’s a cliché and sometimes it is hard to pick yourself up, especially if you are going through a bad time. If you are willing, go to a shelter and help in the run up to Christmas or on the day itself. Helping others is a great way to distract you from your own issues in a positive, valuable way. There are so many places you could do this, and if you want to channel your hurt into something good – this is a great start.
Remember, Christmas is what you make it. It can be a tough time for many so if you are struggling at this time of year, you are not alone. Be gentle with yourself and if you can, make an effort to come with a new Christmas tradition that you can look forward to each year.
