It’s only when you become a parent yourself that you realise how easy it is to nag. Growing up, you no doubt pulled your mum up on her own constant nagging… clean the counter, make your bed, do your homework, etc.
It was a never-ending list of things to do. However, it seems all that nagging is actually a good thing. Well, according to science that is.
Over a period of seven years, the University of Essex studied over 15,000 girls aged between 13 and 14.
From the study, researchers found that kids whose mums had very high expectations tended to do better than those who didn’t.
Researcher, Ericka Rascon-Ramirez said that it was all down to parenting styles, and how these styles influence kids’ choices.
“In many cases, we succeeded in doing what we believed was more convenient for us, even when this was against our parents’ will," Erika told the DailyMail.
"But no matter how hard we tried to avoid our parents’ recommendations, it is likely that they ended up influencing, in a more subtle manner, choices that we had considered extremely personal.”
The findings, which were presented to the Royal Economic Society, found that girls whose mother nagged were more likely to go to college and earn a high salary.
They were also more likely to end up in a stable relationship.
So you keep nagging, mums - it’s all for the greater good of your kids!
