For reasons I still haven’t quite figured out, a weekly shop gives me anxiety. It is a lot of dinners to plan, a lot of food and in my experience a lot of waste.
As a mum of four, it is difficult to plan six dinners over seven days all in one food shop.
I recently started to do a smaller food shop every two or three days and I haven’t looked back.
It works out so much better for me and my family and I’m going to tell you why:
Less Stress
Making a list of all the food my family of 6 consume in a week is a chore. Making the list, going to the shops and making sure I don’t forget anything is all just incredibly stressful for me.
By going to the shop every few days, I buy exactly what we need and maybe just two or three dinner bits. Not a lot of room for forgetting anything there and even if I did, I will be back in a few days anyway!
Less Waste
There is definitely less waste for us if I shop every few days. I always found if I planned for 7 days and 7 dinners, something would come up or somebody would not want a certain dinner (usually me) and fresh veg or even meat would go to waste.
Happier eaters
Who really knows what they want to eat for lunch 5 days from now? Or what they will have for dinner in a weeks’ time? I certainly don’t. I find if I ask my kids what they want for the next three days I will end up cooking things they love and have asked for and they will be more likely to clear their plates.
Fresher fruit and veg
We all know the struggle of trying to keep fruit and veg fresh. When I do a shop every few days it means I'm not over buying fruit and veg and we are eating and using what we have when it is fresh.
