It’s the time of year again and if you are going to buy a gift for your child’s teacher, you may want to think outside the box and not follow the usual, chocolates, sweets, flowers, and candle ‘go-to’ gifts.

While there is nothing wrong with those gifts, it is nice to get something you think your child’s teacher will like, especially if your child loves their teacher.

Here are some tips on picking a great gift for your child’s teacher:

Ask your child.

Depending on your child’s age, they may be able to do some ‘detective work’ and figure out what their teacher would love. Their teacher may chat about things they do in their spare time or talk about their hobbies.

If your child is too young to do this bit of research, then you may need to do some thinking and figure out a gift that is a bit more personal than the usual gift sets.

Be creative.

There are so many gift options but sometimes it is easier to pick up something just for the sake of it. However, if you are hoping to get their teacher a gift they’ll love, then you’ll have to be creative.

Look at your budget as this will also help to determine what you will be able to get and even if you put €20 aside, you should be able to get something nice.

Here are some simple ideas:

  • A personal hamper full of things you think they’ll like - certain foods, drinks, sweets, or go for stationery (which is always a help) or items like beauty or healthcare. A hamper shows you went to that extra effort of putting it together.
  • A voucher for the local town shops or a voucher in a shopping centre. Another good option is a voucher for the local coffee shop, and this will be a good idea especially if you know that the teacher likes a cup of coffee
  • An experience is another nice gift idea - a simple afternoon tea for two is a nice way to show your appreciation for what they do. You could give them a facial or pamper session too.
  • Books and arts can be greatly received as many teachers like to read and they like to go to shows. Booking a show in your local theatre is a nice gift - just make sure you get two tickets!
  • Sports for the right teacher can be another good gift avenue. You could get the teacher tickets to a match or give them a sports jersey from your local club.
  • Perfume and aftershave are always a good bet. Your child may have noticed they wear the same perfume or aftershave and buying one might seem tricky but if you get a gift receipt, they'll be able to exchange it for something they love.

Make your own.

If money is tight, you and your little one could make a special gift as this shows your child has made the effort. Homemade gifts could include cookies in a jar, handmade truffles, toffee or Christmas inspired crafts. Try to avoid homemade art gifts as usually teacher will have an array of pieces of art from their students over the years!
