Decorating a teen's bedroom can be hard - you need to make it a nice space for them as it is where they spend most of their time.

It should be a place they can relax in but also a place to work in as they go towards their exams in the next few years.

Getting the right theme is another consideration. Deciding on whether to work with what you may already have or create a whole new concept is challenging. Here is everything you need to know about decorating your teen's bedroom:

Ask your teenager to plan it out with you

If you want this to be a bedroom that your teenager is happy in until they leave home, you’ll need to let them plan it out.

They’ll enjoy having the chance to choose what they want as more often than not, young kids are told how to do their bedroom by their parents. This is their time to choose what they want - within reason!

Consider the space

Is there anything you can work with or improve? Perhaps, the bed is perfect but you could invest in some new bed sheets and pillows.

If recycling cushions fits with your teenager's ideas, that's a fantastic opportunity to save some money.

Consider your teenager's likes/dislikes

Some teenagers will love to have a fish tank in their bedroom whereas others may not be so inclined, and chairs are another big thing. For gamers, they may want a cool gaming chair, but another teen may prefer a reading chair or simply something to relax in, like a bean bag.

There are so many options when it comes to concepts and colours.

Look at colours and concepts

There are so many options when it comes to concepts and colours. Dusty pink is a popular choice when it's paired with grey. Teal is gorgeous too as well as dark and bold colours such as mustard, red and black.

You’ll find that your teenager will have a clear idea of what they like, and this will help bring their concept to life. Try and give them free reign (or as much as possible) so they can really love their new bedroom.

Measure

For smaller bedrooms, knowing the measurements is vital as getting them wrong could cost you time and money. You’ll need to consider storage for books, games and other things as well as wardrobes, drawers and a bed. You may need to get a certain type of curtain dependent on the windows you have.

Get creative

For study areas, you can get a nice desk, chair and a cool whiteboard for the wall so your teenager can take notes. Some teenagers love chalkboards so they can write things or simply design their wall themselves before removing the chalk and starting again.

Most bedrooms aren’t the same without some personal aspects including photos and posters of your teen and their friends.

Shop smart and keep to the budget

A great way get the ball rolling is to get your teenager into the car and spend an afternoon looking at homeware. However, before you head off, talk to your teenager about what the price bracket is, so they don’t fall in love with something hugely expensive.

Have the budget plan and stick to it no matter what.
