Here is a list of some of our favourite things to do with the kids in Kildare.
Heading out and about in Kildare and not sure what to do? Here is a list of some of our favourite things to do with kids of all ages that won't cost you the earth.
Clonfert Pet Farm
You will never beat a day out at Clonfert Pet Farm in my opinion, it's a firm favourite with all my kids. They have three playgrounds, an indoor play area (perfect for a rainy day), a zip wire, two go-kart tracks, a large bouncy castle and a newly built hobbit house. You will find the usual farm animals that you can feed if you arrive before midday. They also have some more unusual farm animals including kangaroo, emu, deer and alpaca. Clonfert Pet Farm has miniature golf for an extra charge of €2 per person, picnics are welcome and there's a very reasonably priced cafe on site to enjoy. A day out at Clonfert is €15 for two adults and three children, under three's go free.
Lullymore Discovery & Heritage Park
Known as one of the top tourist attractions in Kildare with a host of activities for kids both big and small. Lullymore is surrounded by a sea of peat and is a haven for heritage exhibits including famine cottages, acres of peatland biodiversity trails, environmental tours, stone-age settlements and themed gardens. On-site, you will also find a state-of-the-art indoor play centre, train rides, a petting farm, a playground and mini golf. Average visits usually take 3-4 hours but there is no time limit on your day at Lullymore and it's very educational!
The Steam Museum
Have a little one who adores Thomas The Tank Engine? Well, this may just be the perfect day out for you and your family. Visit a fine collection of steam locomotives, including those once used in the late 19th century by the Great Northern Railway. Housed in a church that once stood in the Inchicore railway works you will find steam engines, large beam engines, a Cornish boiler and several smaller engines are on the show. It is a great day out for the whole family, however, The Steam Museum only opens from May to September but family tickets are a steal at €20.
Irish National Stud & Gardens
Enjoy horses, castles and beautiful flowers all in one beautiful setting. This one is for a summer's days and costs €28 for a family ticket of two adults and four children. Get lost in the beautiful Japanese Gardens, explore the Horse Museum, visit some of Ireland’s finest horses at the Stud and pop by the play area and avail of the play equipment suitable for all ages including swings, slides and climbing frames.
The Kildare Maze Activity Park
Hidden amongst the north Kildare countryside, The Kildare Maze Activity Park is a fabulous day out costing just under €30 for a family ticket. A picnic is a must as they only have a small shop selling sweet treats, minerals and hot drinks. Get lost in the Hedge Maze and Wooden Maze or let the kids enjoy a host of activities within the park including crazy golf, zip line, sandpit, petting corner and a huge adventure trail.
