Camping is the perfect way to reconnect while taking in the beautiful outdoors.
Planning a staycation in the coming months? Why not consider sleeping beneath the stars this summer with the family in tow? Camping is the perfect way to reconnect while taking in the beautiful outdoors and it gives children the freedom to explore a world away from technology. What's not to love?
If you are planning a camping trip in the near future here are nine camping tips to make your outdoor adventure less stressful and more enjoyable:
Do a trial run. There is nothing worse than trying to construct a tent with small kids running around your feet, especially if you have never done it before. Practice setting it up and taking it down before you leave on your camping adventure take some of the stress away. It's a great way to make sure there are no tent defects and always bring some extra stacks in the car with you because you just never know.
Add some luxury. If you don't fancy roughing it in the sticks why not consider going glamping instead? Ireland is bursting with unique glampsites offering a luxurious sleep experience with the outdoorsy camping feel.
Check the weather. Irish weather is so unpredictable at times but it's worth keeping an eye on. Bring extra rain gear if rain is forecast and make sure you consider the direction of the wind when pitching your tent. A friend always recommends we line our tent with a plastic sheet so our belongings remain dry throughout our mini adventure. Air bed also gets very cold at night so bring an extra fleece blanket to pop over it before you hit the hay.
Do your research. While Ireland has a variety of campsites to suit different wants and needs, make sure you research your campsite prior to booking. Do they allow BBQs or gas cookers? Is there a curfew? Is there a campers kitchen and clean hot showers? Are there any activities for the kids? Are pets allowed? Have you looked up Google reviews? There is nothing worse than arriving at your campsite to find out all electrical spots are fully booked for the weekend. Be extra prepared.
Get permission. If you are planning on camping it rough whether it be in the woods or on a beach, are you allowed? Some places have restrictions and you may need permission from landowners or even the local council. Be sure to double check before you hit the road. And always unpack and set up camp while it's bright out.
Make a list. And check it twice! Before you hit the road make sure you have everything you need. Pack appropriate clothing, invest in comfortable sleep equipment including sleeping mats and sleeping bags, cool bags are a must and have you got camping chairs? You would be crazy to go camping without some decent chairs for chilling out on in the evenings.
Leave no trace. Sounds obvious to most but clean up after yourself and dispose of your rubbish correctly. Be mindful of other campers and wildlife.
Invest in a Camping Key Europe card. Camping Key Europe (CKE) cards are accepted by numerous camping sites and pitches across Ireland. Cardholders receive discounts on overnight stays and activities so if you plan on camping a few times this summer, it's worth the investment. They cost €16 and you can order one from www.campingireland.ie.
Anything else I need to think about? Other things to consider when camping in Ireland are bug repellent spray, mobile power banks, pumps, marshmallows, bikes, scooters, first aid kit, torches, hot water bottles, bottled water, sun cream and of course, your wellies.
