If you have a teenager’s party this year you will need to be aware of the etiquette, or lack of! Depending on your teenager’s preference a party for them can be a quiet affair or the most extravagant occasion.
The most important parties are usually for 13- or 16-year olds who are ready to enjoy the event. It seems simple to organise a party for teenagers, but it is anything but! Gone are the days of a slice of cake, pass the parcel and pin the tail on the donkey.
Here are some tips on holding a great party for a teenager.
Set some rules first – Yes, your teenager can have a party but set some ground rules first. Your teenager may want the house to themselves, but this is never a good idea especially for older teenagers who may arrive with alcohol or arrive drunk. You need to be there to monitor things and take care of people if needed. Under 18’s shouldn’t be drinking anyway and while some may arrive under the influence you need to tell your teen that drunken behaviour will not be tolerated.
Pick a theme – Depending on your teenager’s preferences they could want an 80’s inspired party or a laid-back sporty party. However, not all parties need a theme, but it is nice to follow some colour coordinated party décor and accessories. Ask your teenager about it before you start as most teens have their own ideas and though you like red and gold your teenager may not.
Get a guest list going – Give your teenager a brief rundown on how many people they can invite and be willing to fight your cause as some teens will want everyone at their party! This isn’t possible and while you want your teen to have fun you can’t cater to loads of people and if you can; brilliant!
Pick the cake – If you are having a cool party then you will need to order a nice cake, and this can be costly! Do your homework and browse a few places for the type of cake your teenager wants.
Get plenty of food in – Teenagers love to eat so decide on the food and ensure you have plenty of it and the same goes for crisps, popcorn and treats. Don’t let their mature age fool you as even the oldest of teenagers like jellies and gummy bears! The same goes for drinks and if you are feeling adventurous go for “mocktails” in fancy glasses that are perfect for young people.
Pick a music list – Your teenager will decide on the music and you must accept it! If the weather allows or you have a large garden with plenty of shelter take the party outside and save on the mess inside. Teenagers usually get a bit messy, so an outside party could be a perfect choice.
Have fun – It may be a bit stressful for parents, but your teenager will love you for having a good party. Sure, there will be a mess and it may be manic prior to the main event but it is an occasion for your teenager to remember for the rest of their lives.
