Of course, driveways serve a particular purpose but with a little bit of thought and creativity, they can become beautiful spaces.
If you are blessed with a driveway with enough room to park one or two cars or more, you may not know how to make the most of the space.
Yes, driveways have a purpose, but they also have the potential to look splendid and with some thought, they can add to a home’s charm.
Here, we offer some advice on how to make the most out of your driveway:
Look at your driveway and consider what might work in the space.
Some people decide to do an overhaul of their driveway, changing from a functional tarmac to a more stylish gravel type driveway. Tarmac isn’t too expensive compared with other choices and gravel is a cost-effective choice too, but paving stones will set you back however; they last longer than the other choices and they look fantastic too.
You may be lucky enough to already have the driveway you want but for others, they will need to update theirs or change it totally. Gravel changes over time and tarmac is troublesome at times but with paving stones, there is that added ‘wow’ factor!
Any type of driveway may have a weed issue
While it is less likely to be a problem with paving stones, it is still an issue – something to consider before you decide what type of driveway you are investing in. A driveway is the first thing visitors will see upon arrival to your home so make it as beautiful as possible and within your budget.
Don’t forget to be realistic about what is possible and the lifestyle you lead at home. You may need to take advantage of the space for car parking and leave it clean and simple, but some homeowners don’t need as much car space and can create a lovely little garden or flower area to greet visitors to the home.
What type of cars do you and other members of your family drive?
Will there be enough space and does anyone drive a truck or van? Larger vehicles need more space and ensuring they have ample room to turn and park up without any hassle is key.
If this means reducing garden space then so be it as the driveway must be first and foremost fully functional. You can dress up your driveway with hanging plants outside the front door, potted plants lining up the pathway and ornaments or water features.
Do you have children?
If you have children and if they plan to play out the front you may need room for garden furniture or toys, and this is possible if it is safe to do so.
Make sure a play area for the kids is away from cars and ensure gates are always closed. Don’t forget, you’ll have guests at some stages and where will they park? You may not want them to have to park in the flower beds so again, be practical.
Finally, whatever you do, have fun and enjoy your driveway! It may be an afterthought for most homeowners but a good driveway that is welcoming and functional is worth its weight in gold!
