These movies will make for the most epic family weekend inside while everyone's tucked under the duvet.
With Irish summers being very much hit and miss in terms of what the weather forecast has in store for us, if you're running out of ideas as to what the family can do for a weekend indoors, why not plan a family movie marathon?!
All you have to do is decide on which franchise will be your choice, get all of the snacks lined up, all of the pillows fluffed and ready, and embark on a journey into one of these magical worlds.
Harry Potter (available to rent online)
Let's start off with one of the all-time favourites that we never, ever seem to get bored of - Harry Potter! We're going to keep it strictly to the first eight movies in the franchise, but if you're feeling like doing all 10 of the movies in the Wizarding World for your family movie marathon then we won't stop you. From Harry's first trip down Diagon Alley to the epic showdown at Hogwarts, the series has it all.
Shrek (Netflix)
2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the first time we laid eyes on this beloved ogre and his noble steed. The franchise is still, to this day, one of the best comedy animations to grace our screens, and we keep finding ourselves chuckling along to the madness no matter how many times we've watched it. All four Shrek movies are available on Netflix (with Shrek and Shrek 2 available on Sky Cinema and NOW).
Star Wars (Disney+)
While it might not be everyone's cup of tea, there's no denying that Star Wars is one of the biggest movie franchises to ever exist. If you've got a Disney+ account, you could spend hours upon hours watching all of the Star Wars content you could ever want - but maybe start with the nine movies of the space opera to start off with. The kids will love all of the space travel (and Chewbacca!).
Ice Age (Disney+)
The Ice Age franchise kicked off back in 2002 and it managed to squeeze out five different iterations following the seismic exploits of some now-extinct, but very lovable, animals. All five movies, plus some of the Ice Age specials, are available to watch via Disney+.
The Muppets (Disney+)
You can't go wrong with a group of live-action Muppets. The puppets with the wise-cracking, off-the-wall mouths have quite an extensive collection available, such as their versions of Treasure Island and A Christmas Carol. They also have some original movies to keep everyone entertained, including the two new movies which were released over the past 10 years.
Toy Story (Disney+)
Finally, could your weekend of hosting a family movie marathon really get any better than by watching all of Pixar's Toy Story movies back to back? A movie franchise that has remained consistently stellar and fantastical since its debut back in 1995, join Woody, Buzz, Rex, and the rest of the crew for four movies and many more short story collections on Disney+.
