Covid-19 has had a profound affect on all areas of modern day life. The way we experience the world is very different than it was a couple of months ago. We've adjusted, made the most of it and surprised ourselves with the level of resilience we have shown. For some Irish families, however, the changes have been devastating. Adults with disabilities have been left stranded without access to vital day services and we want to help.
Laura Campion has started a petition to raise awareness about this issue which impacts her family in a huge way. She is campaigning for the resumption of day services for adults who have disabilities. Laura's twenty eight year old sister Deirdre has down syndrome and she is desperately missing the social interaction and support that day services have always offered her. Laura feels passionate about helping her sister once again have access to such an important aspect of her day to day life.
" Since April, she has not marked off a new day on her calendar. For all intents and purposes, every day is like ‘Groundhog Day’. Her world has become very small without access to her day service and the support it provides. "
Laura has set up a petition on change.org directed at a number of decision makers such as TD Stephen Donnelly and the Minister For Health. Laura feels that a clear and detailed roadmap and a proper plan with timelines is necessary so that families like her own can have something to work towards. August and September is simply too late for a resumption of services.
Laura speaks emphatically about the fact that hairdressers and restaurants have now re-opened with proper hygiene and safety policies in place. The same should be happening for these day services so that they can resume safely.
"When are our loved ones going to be able to access their services? They too, deserve to see a resumption of their daily activities. These services are a lifeline and I believe they can be delivered in a safe way for their users and staff. Service providers, staff and the HSE need to make this work"
