Having two mothers is normal in her world but it is not always a topic that people are familiar or comfortable with.
A teacher in Michigan has refused to allow one student to write about gay marriage for an assignment at school. The reason is believed to be the fact that this topic could make other students in the class feel uncomfortable.
As part of her studies, student Destiny McDermitt was assigned the task of writing an essay about a topic that she feels strongly about. She chose the topic of gay marriage as it is an issue very close to her heart. Destiny has two mothers and therefore felt it was an important topic to explore for her class paper.
It is believed that Destiny's teacher denied this request for the assignment. The topic of gay marriage was not approved in case it made other students feel uncomfortable. As a result Destiny was extremely upset and angry.
The purpose of the assignment was for students to think about an issue that concerns your community, country or the world. Writing an essay/speech about the topic was then considered to be "taking a stand" against that important issue.
Destiny McDermitt saw this as a great opportunity to speak about gay marriage. Having two mothers is normal in her world but is not always a topic that people are familiar or comfortable with. This made it the perfect topic for her school assignment and yet, ironically, it was not allowed in case others felt uncomfortable listening to it.
This situation has caused a lot of anger for same sex parents around the world. An assignment which is supposed to encourage diversity and change has lead to silence about an important topic for one student. The teacher in question has remained unnamed but it is believed that Destiny McDermitt's parents have formed an official complaint.
