Jeans and a t-shirt is the go-to outfit for most mums: it’s easy, crease-proof and there are numerous styles and colour combinations so you won’t get bored. However, sometimes we all feel like rather than just grabbing something "quick", we also want to look "chic"!
Fear not, by adding a couple of extra pieces, you’ll feel more on-trend, even if you’re just taking the kids to the park. Here are some easy fashion accessories for mums that anyone can pull off.
Sunglasses
I used to treat myself to a new pair of high-street sunglasses every summer, and by the end of the year, they’d be scratched and battered after accompanying me on various trips away and a sun holiday by the beach. When we went to the West Coast of America for our honeymoon a good few years ago, my hubby and I both bought a pair of designer sunglasses. Because they were more expensive, I’ve taken better care of them and they’re still perfect (helped by the fact we’ve had fewer holidays away). I used to "save" them but now I wear them all the time and they always help me look like I’ve made an effort (even if my hair’s full of dry shampoo and I ran out of time to do my eye makeup).
Blazer
Blazers are a cover-up rather than an accessory, but they’ll take you from slouchy to smart in a flash. There are several styles out there including fitted, formal, longline and loose. I’ve got more blazers in my wardrobe than I’d care to mention, but it doesn’t stop me from looking at new versions for 2021. A pastel double-breasted one is at the top of my wishlist and I know it’ll be versatile enough to wear it on both weekends and weekdays.
Bag
Don’t you just love it when oversized bags are in? As much as we may love the minimalist look, when you have a couple of kids in tow, unless you’ve got room in your bag for wipes, snacks and toys you won’t be able to leave the house for long. Graduating from a changing bag to an actual handbag is quite an exciting step in a mum’s world (well it was for me anyway). Even though you need something roomy, it’s great to be able to choose something formal-looking that will take you from drab to fab. If you want something extra special (AKA expensive) it also makes for a perfect present - hint, hint.
Trainers
Another thing we have to be thankful for is the fact that trainers are reigning supreme in the shoe world. Realistically, we’d be wearing them regardless as unless you’re Beyonce, running around in heels is impossible. We're able to enjoy the comfort whilst also knowing we look great. Beige runners are bang-on-trend and that suits me just fine because they go well with lighter colours for summer whilst also camouflaging splashes from puddles and sticky fingers. I got some Balenciaga-look-a-likes for my birthday and I never take them off.
Jewellery
Both colourful bead bracelets and necklaces with your kids’ names or initials are everywhere right now and that’s great news for mums. We love any excuse to show off how much we adore our little angels and if you’re a fan of the beaded look why not get them involved? I recently saw some gorgeous bracelets adorning the list of an influencer but also thought that they looked familiar. Turns out I’d previously browsed something very similar on a kids’ arts and crafts website. My mind’s made up now and I will be adding the beads to the basket and getting my eldest to create a piece for me that will give me all the feels!
