Growing older can be a daunting thought. It is full of uncertainty and for most, change. But are we worrying about something that we cannot control? Absolutely.
Is there a better way to look at growing older? In a way that we can live a happier life and truly enjoy what is to come instead of fearing the unknown? The key is to change your mindset, allowing yourself to embrace a positive attitude toward ageing and staying active in the ways that matter to you.
But what other ways can you help to embrace growing older?
Don’t identify with stereotypes.
Years ago, we associated ageing and retirement with sitting in a chair with a blanket over your lap. But nowadays people stay in the workforce much longer than in previous generations.
People are also taking much better care of themselves, much better than our previous generations and this is contributing to people living longer.
Don’t identify with any older generational stereotypes. Just because you hit a certain age or milestone doesn’t mean you have to fall into a ‘box’ or stop doing the things that bring you joy.
Change your attitude about growing older.
Scientific research confirms the belief that you are only as old as you feel. Studies show that feeling younger than you are can actually have protective effects against depression, dementia and much more.
Staying active also has been proven to attribute to feeling younger. Forget the number of candles on the birthday cake and remember you are only as old as your mind thinks you are.
Respect your body.
Again changing your mindset helps immensely with how you feel. Many fear wrinkles, saggy skin or even grey hairs. But, remember each one of those crow’s feet have come from a smile. All of the times you have laughed.
Your sagging boobs may be from breastfeeding your children. Your tired legs have danced into the early hours many times. Love your body and know that each time it changes slightly, it is a reminder of where you have come from and the life experiences you've had.
Go back to your roots.
Grey hair has never been trendier. Going back to your roots feels daunting we know, but by doing so you may also feel incredibly empowered. Embracing your natural hair colour will bring out an inner glow you didn’t even realise existed.
