Autumn is a busy enough time for mums as it is; all of the pumpkin carving and costume making. So, when it comes to creating an autumn capsule wardrobe, we need to keep things simple.
The great news is that with a little effort we can look polished and put together, even if we feel like a "hot mess" on the inside. Here are the eight pieces you need to create the perfect autumn capsule wardrobe.
Trench Coat
Nothing says autumn fashion like the classic trench coat; it’s smart, it’s warm (but not too warm), and it’s great if you’re caught in a rain shower (as long as you have an umbrella to hand). On top of that, because it’s long, you don’t need to worry too much about what you wear underneath it!
Black Blazer
The quickest way to smarten up a t-shirt and jeans? Throw on a black blazer! I don’t think there are many mums that have time for a full outfit change if they get a last-minute opportunity for a night out, so a blazer is a great finishing touch.
Black Boots
Smart, flat, black boots can be teamed with virtually anything and they’re suitable for both the school run and a shopping trip. I got some lace-up ankle boots last autumn and have got so much wear out of them. They’re really comfy and keep my feet warm and cosy.
Trainers
Trainers are the quintessential item in any mum’s wardrobe and if you pick up the perfect pair, as well as being comfortable, they can also elevate your outfit. White trainers are in right now, but they’re not very practical. Stick to black if you know they’ll get mucky on their first outing.
Black Jeans
Jeans are versatile as it is, but if you get them in black they’ll take you from day to night (even if it’s just to nip out for a supermarket sweep). They can be dressed up or down and literally go with everything. They’re the one item that I always pack no matter where I’m going or what I’m doing.
Black Leggings
Black leggings are making a come back which is good news if you want to be comfortable crawling around playing with trains, but still want to look smart at a mums meet up – simply throw on your trench and trainers and you’re good to go.
Sweatshirt
Comfort is key when you’re a mum, which means a sweatshirt is your best friend for an autumn capsule wardrobe addition. Select one in a neutral colour and it will team up with your other key items with ease. Get one with a graphic print if you want to add interest or if you’d prefer to stick to a plain design, you can always add a statement necklace to smarten it up.
Breton Top
Stripes aren’t going anywhere and by wearing a Breton top you’ll be bang on-trend. Traditional versions are navy and white but black and white looks great too. They’re ideal for a coffee morning with some fellow mums or if you’re having a lazy Sunday, you could even twin with your child as kids collections are full of them too!
